The Jock and His Mental Crutch

Junk: 07.02.08 star Observations star

Have you ever noticed that the jock must always draw life analogies from sports?  Every story, life lesson, or “deep” thought (if this is possible) must have some sports metaphor, of which they must make us aware. A friend of mine when writing about a best selling author was unable to resist this intellectual crutch and wrote the following:

He gives up more ground than the 2006 Indianapolis Colts defense (seventh worst all time) and uses more misdirection than an option offense.

We’ve all heard these types of stupid analogies used in the work place:

  • Keep the ball moving
  • There’s no “I” in “team”
  • That’s a slam-dunk
  • Lets touch base

Can you think of any other stupid sports analogies?

I feel I really need to ’step up to the plate’ and ‘take one for the team’ while the rest of the commenters are ‘on deck’ and say…. you need to ‘take a timeout’!

not to mention keeping your eye on the ball while heading for the goal line, always remembering that the best defense is a good offense….

jh, Thanks for your kind words!

I’m a modest man. I don’t take encouragement well. Nor do I like to share the encouragement I receive with others. After pleading for your kind words to be posted I have decided to comply.

Thanks again!

I have to say that “I was caught looking” on that one. This comment section is now “a whole new ball game” after JH’s comments. I’d say he’s really “in a league of his own”.

p.s. Anyone wondering at the source for the quote can do a simple google search to find the original article.
