Emoticons — the Plight of Communication

Junk: 07.12.07 star Observations star

dead emoticonCould there be a more meaningless form of communication that the internet has brought about then emoticons? O.k. if I think about that too long I start to think of some others, such as abbreviations for meaningless sayings like “LOL”. Who in their right mind is actually laughing out loud when the type that? Nobody. I find these both to be a regressive form of communication that in turn actually communicate the user is a mongoloid. I recently received an email from a friend who ended the first sentence with a smiley-face emoticon at which point I stopped reading and hit the delete key.

Kelley,

not sure do you mean: communication?

“=)” does this mean you are very happy about what you read?

=) means i’m mildly amused. and thank you for adjusting your atrocious misspelling.

emoticons complement the textual portions; u don’t need them per se but they do make things easier (and more cheery too)

:-)

Tanna,

yes, easier; but for whom the reader or the writer?

i’d like to think they make things easier for both parties

@Tanna, as a reader i can say i rarely understand a persons emotional state any better if they include an emoticon or not. is this ” :) ” really what your face looks like when you smile?
